Diagnostic imaging at The Angeles Clinic and Research Institute incorporates some of the most sophisticated medical technology in the world. We routinely perform studies using the latest technologies in positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) fusion scanners. All diagnostic imaging tests are interpreted by our board-certified, fellowship-trained radiologists.

Meet our Radiologists

Ali Reza Borghei, MD

Ali Reza Borghei, MD is a fellowship-trained radiologist at The Angeles Clinic and Research Institute. Dr. Borghei earned his Master of Science in Medical Imaging and Doctor of Medicine at The Chicago Medical School, Finch University of Health Sciences. He completed an internal medicine residency program at the Los Angeles County Hospital. While completing a Radiology Residency Program at the University of Arizona, the Journal of Nuclear Medicine, honored Dr. Borghei as a recipient of their Outstanding Basic Sciences Investigation Award. Dr. Borghei performed a fellowship in Abdominal Imaging and Interventions at the University of Los Angeles.

Dr. Borghei's research is published in peer-reviewed journals. He is trilingual: fluent in Farsi, Spanish, and English.

Kevin Drake, MD

Kevin Drake, MD is a fellowship-trained radiologist with board-certification in diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine. Dr. Drake earned his Medical Degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed a medical internship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in PA and a diagnostic radiology residency and a nuclear medicine fellowship at the University of Los Angeles in CA.

As a student, Dr. Drake received Highest Honors, Membership in Tau Beta Pi Honorary and Eta Kappa Nu Honorary, Maxwell Prize for Excellence in Scientific Writing, Teaching Award at the Holy Cross Medical Center, Clarity of Dictation Award at Holy Cross Medical Center, and Clarity of Dictation Award at Santa Monica Hospital.

Dr. Drake has served as an editorial consultant for the publications Cardiovascular Procedures and CV Mosby Company.   He is a member of the Radiology Society of North America, Los Angeles Radiological Society, and American College of Radiology.

Medical Imaging Services

The Angeles Clinic and Research Institute’s Medical Imaging Services include:

Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT)

Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) is a powerful medical imaging tool that combines the best of PET and CT to create exceptionally detailed images.  PET/CT is especially useful for diagnosing and treatment planning for brain disorders conditions and cancer.  PET/CT is a short and painless procedure.

PET/CT is used in the treatment of cancer for:

  • Locating of a mass (occult tumors)
  • Accurate staging and restaging of cancer
  • Predicting reliably if masses are cancerous or not for masses that are difficult to evaluate with conventional imaging after therapy

In the future, researchers hope to expand the use of PET towards usage that is both functional and anatomical, including:

  • Predicting early stage response to cancer treatment
  • Comparing the usefulness of drugs
  • Determining the optimal dosage and treatment schedule of cancer medications

Visit The Angeles Clinic and Research Institute’s Patient Education Library to learn more about PET/CT.

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

Percutaneous ablation techniques are important treatment alternatives for managing pain due to bony metastatic disease. Radiofrequency ablation techniques use heat to destroy cancer cells. The RFA procedure is guided by medical imaging. Radiofrequency ablation techniques are successfully utilized as a potential therapeutic tool for removing or reducing cancer in a variety of organs in the body. In most cases, RFA is an outpatient procedure and can be performed at The Angeles Clinic and Research Institute in West Los Angeles, California.

Image guided radiofrequency ablation techniques have achieved some success in the cancer field, including:

  • The potential cure of liver metastases in several types of cancer, most notably metastatic colorectal cancer
  • Lung cancer, renal cancer, and adrenal cancer therapy
  • A viable alternative to more invasive surgical procedures
  • Most frequently used when surgical procedures are contraindicated
  • Treatment of painful bone metastases is an exciting new use
  • Significant pain reduction is possible in patients who have failed to achieve benefit from conventional therapies that include chemotherapy and external beam radiation. Importantly, the pain reduction that is achieved can be lasting
