State-of-the-art Therapy: New Treatments, New Hope

The outlook for men with metastatic prostate cancer has mostly been bleak and desolate. Previously, therapy relied soley on an armamentarium of complete hormonal ablation followed by a sole chemotherapeutic option. After these options were exhausted patients were left with therapies yet to have proven survival benefit. Over the last year, the status of systemic therapy for metastatic prostate cancer has experienced a welcome boost in significant discoveries.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is a common type of cancer in men.  The prostate is a golf ball size gland found only in men.  It is located underneath the bladder and in front of the rectum.  In most cases, prostate cancer occurs when the cells in the prostate gland grow abnormally or out of control.  The exact cause of prostate cancer is unknown.

Prostate cancer is typically a slow growing cancer.  Screening tests can identify most prostate cancers before symptoms develop.  Many forms of prostate cancer can be treated if detected early.  Survival rates for men treated for prostate cancer are very good. Learn more about prostate cancer.

Bladder Cancer

The exact cause of bladder cancer is unknown; however cigarette smoking and exposure to certain industrial chemicals appear to be risk factors.  The most common symptoms of bladder cancer are blood in the urine and changes in urinary habits.  Some forms of bladder cancer are curable if detected and treated very early.  Follow up care is important for bladder cancer because it has a high risk of returning following treatment.  Most bladder cancers that return respond well to treatment.

Testicular Cancer

The testicles produce sperm and male sex hormones.  The testes are located in the scrotum behind the penis.  Testicular cancer is rare.  Testicular cancer occurs most frequently in men between the ages of 15 and 34. Testicular cancer is typically highly treatable, even if it has spread.
