Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a common type of cancer in women.  It is a malignant (cancerous) tumor that begins from the cells in the breast. Breast cancer can rarely develop in men, as well.  There are several different types of breast cancer, and they may develop in any part of the breast.  Early detection and treatment is very important because some forms of breast cancer are treatable.  Advancements in early detection methods and more tolerable cancer treatments have helped to reduce the number of breast cancer related deaths and improve quality of life.

Breast cancer is currently the leading cause of cancer death among Hispanic women and the second leading cause of cancer death among White, Black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women.  Although breast cancer treatments have come a long way over time, women still need to remain vigilant and should contact their doctor if they notice changes in their breasts. Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer occurs when the cells of the ovaries grow abnormally or out of control.  The ovaries are part of the female reproductive system.  This type of cancer may or may not cause obvious symptoms before it has reached an advanced stage.  It is vital that women with symptoms seek evaluation because ovarian cancer that is detected and treated early is associated with the best outcomes.  Treatment for ovarian cancer usually involves surgery followed by chemotherapy. Bladder Cancer

The exact cause of bladder cancer is unknown; however cigarette smoking and exposure to certain industrial chemicals appear to be risk factors.  The most common symptoms of bladder cancer are blood in the urine and changes in urinary habits.  Some forms of bladder cancer are curable if detected and treated very early.  Follow up care is important for bladder cancer because it has a high risk of returning following treatment.  Most bladder cancers that return respond well to treatment. Uterine Cancer - Endometrial Cancer

Uterine cancer - endometrial cancer is the most common type of uterine cancer.  It is the most common cancer of the female reproductive system.  The primary symptom of endometrial cancer is abnormal vaginal bleeding.  Treatment usually involves surgery followed by radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, or a combination of treatments.  Because the majority of endometrial cancers are detected and treated early, it is associated with better outcomes than other forms of gynecological cancers.  Learn more about uterine cancer - endometrial cancer.
